The
Bedugul leisure Park ( Taman Rekreasi Bedugul ) is at the southern
end of the lake, It's along the first road to the right as you com
in from the south long the water front are an expensive restourant,
souvenir shops, a hotel, and facilities for a number of water activities.
Nort of the Bedugul the road climbs a hill and descends again to
an intersection. conspicuously marked with a large, phallic sculpture
of a sweet corn cob. The smaller road leads west up to the entrance
of the Kebun Raya Bali, the botanical garden. The gardens were established
in 1959 as a branch of the national botanical gardens at Bogor,
near Jakarta. They cover more than 120 hectares on the lower slopes
of Gunung Pohon, and have an extensive collection of trees and some
500 species of orchid. It's a lovely place, cool, shady, and scenic.
Usually there are very few visitors, but groups of Balinese like
to come for picnics, especially on Sunday when the atmosphere is
more festive.
Some plants are labelled with their botanical names, but apart
from that there is almost nothing in the way of visitor information.
Some visitors have been annoyed here by stray dogs carry a stick
to detter them.
