Penelokan
appropriately means place to look and has superb views acroos to
Gunung Batur and down to Lake Batur at the bottom of the crater.
The road runs around the narrow rim of the crater to Penulisan,
where you can look back into the crater or turn the other way and
see Bali's northern coastline spread out at your feet, far below.
You can stay in Penelokan, but those intending to tour the lake
or climb Gunung Batur might find it more convenient to stay at the
bottom of the crater, in either kedisan or Toyah Bungkah.
Penelokan has a reputation as a money grubbing place where you're
constantly importuned to buy things and where you need to keep an
eye on your gear. Many day tours come to Gunung Batur, stopping
for lunch at Penelokan. The hawkers have trained themselves to make
their pitch and close the deal quickly. The only thing sure to discourage
them is the arrival of a bus - load of tourists more affluent than
yourself.
It can get surprisingly chilly up here so come prepared. Clouds
often roll in over the crater, sometimes getting hung up along the
rim, obscuring the view and making the crater rim towns cold and
miserable places to be.
